Group E
Ivory Coast 2-0 Curacao
Ecuador 2-1 Germany
Ecuador and Ivory Coast booked their places in the FIFA World Cup Round of 32 on Thursday after dramatic victories over Germany and Curaçao respectively, completing a memorable finish to Group E.
While Germany had already secured top spot in the group before kickoff, Ecuador produced a spirited comeback to defeat the four-time world champions 2-1, while Ivory Coast made history by reaching the knockout stage for the first time with a commanding 2-0 victory over Curaçao.
Ecuador stun group winners Germany
Germany, already assured of first place after victories over Curaçao and Ivory Coast, looked set to finish the group with a perfect record when Leroy Sané fired them into the lead just two minutes into the match.
The early goal appeared to reinforce Germany's dominance, but Ecuador responded almost immediately.
Nilson Angulo levelled the scores in the ninth minute, scoring Ecuador's first goal of the tournament and injecting belief into a side that knew victory would almost certainly secure qualification.
Germany controlled long spells of possession and threatened through Sané and Deniz Undav, but Ecuador remained disciplined and dangerous on the counterattack.
The decisive moment arrived in the 77th minute.
Following a corner kick, Kevin Rodríguez flicked the ball across the six-yard box, where Gonzalo Plata reacted quickest. As veteran goalkeeper Manuel Neuer attempted to gather the loose ball, Plata stretched out a boot to poke it over the line and complete Ecuador's comeback.
The victory lifted Ecuador to four points, enough to finish third in Group E and secure one of the tournament's best third-placed qualification spots.
It also marked only the second time Ecuador have progressed beyond the World Cup group stage, having previously reached the Round of 16 in Germany in 2006.
Germany, despite suffering their first defeat of the tournament, comfortably advanced as Group E winners.
Ivory Coast make history
Elsewhere in Philadelphia, Ivory Coast wrote a new chapter in the country's football history by defeating Curaçao 2-0 to reach the World Cup knockout stage for the first time.
Nicolas Pépé was the hero for Les Éléphants, scoring once in each half to send the West Africans into the Round of 32 in style.
The Villarreal winger struck just seven minutes into the match after 19-year-old Yan Diomande capitalised on a defensive error before squaring the ball for an easy finish.
Ivory Coast dominated proceedings thereafter, refusing to sit back despite knowing that a draw would have been enough to qualify.
Pépé sealed the victory in the 64th minute, curling a superb left-footed effort into the far corner to complete his brace and spark jubilant celebrations among the thousands of Ivorian supporters inside the stadium.
He received a standing ovation when substituted three minutes later after a performance that underlined his importance to the team.
The victory sends Ivory Coast into the knockout rounds for the first time in four World Cup appearances, a landmark achievement for the West African nation.
Their reward is a Round of 32 showdown on June 30 against either France or Norway, depending on the final standings in Group I.
For Curaçao, the defeat brought a brave World Cup debut campaign to an end.
The Caribbean nation, with a population of just over 150,000, had captured global attention by earning their first-ever World Cup point in a goalless draw against Ecuador after goalkeeper Eloy Room produced one of the tournament's greatest goalkeeping performances with 15 saves.
