Group B
Switzerland 2-1 Canada
Bosnia and Herzegovina 3-1 Qatar
Switzerland secured top spot in Group B and booked their place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 32 with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over co-hosts Canada in Vancouver on Wednesday.
Second-half goals from Ruben Vargas and Johan Manzambi proved decisive as the Swiss finished the group stage unbeaten on seven points, while Canada also advanced to the knockout rounds despite suffering their first defeat of the tournament.
The result means Switzerland will remain in Vancouver for their Round of 32 fixture, while Canada, who would have topped the group with a draw, now head to Los Angeles for their next match.
The contest was short on excitement during a cagey first half, with both teams struggling to create meaningful opportunities. In fact, the sides combined for just three attempts on target in the opening 45 minutes.
The most notable incident before the break came when Swiss captain Granit Xhaka and Canada striker Cyle Larin were both booked after a heated confrontation over a quickly taken free-kick.
However, Switzerland emerged from the interval with renewed purpose.
Just one minute into the second half, 20-year-old forward Johan Manzambi sparked the breakthrough. After receiving possession in a promising position, he shifted the ball into the path of Ruben Vargas, who was afforded too much space and calmly slotted a low finish past the Canadian goalkeeper at the near post.
The goal transformed the tempo of the match, with Switzerland growing increasingly confident in possession while Canada struggled to replicate the attacking form that had seen them thrash Qatar 6-0 earlier in the tournament.
Manzambi, who had already impressed as a substitute during Switzerland's victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina, then got on the scoresheet himself to double the lead and put the Europeans firmly in control.
Canada responded late in the contest through Promise David, whose goal reignited hopes of a comeback and lifted the home crowd. The co-hosts pushed forward in search of an equaliser, but Switzerland held firm to secure all three points and first place in the group.
The victory capped an impressive group-stage campaign for Murat Yakin's side, who finished with seven points from three matches and head into the knockout rounds full of confidence.
Bosnia keep hopes alive
In the other Group B fixture, Bosnia and Herzegovina kept their World Cup dream alive with a 3-1 victory over Qatar in Seattle.
The result eliminated Qatar from the tournament and moved Bosnia onto four points, level with Canada, although the Europeans finished third on goal difference.
While Canada's qualification as runners-up was confirmed, Bosnia must now wait to discover whether their points tally will be enough to see them advance as one of the tournament's best third-placed teams.
As the group stage enters its decisive final days, Switzerland and Canada can now look forward to the knockout rounds, while Bosnia anxiously await their fate.
