Kent State University recently launched fashion education programmes in Rwanda, a move expected to help develop the skilled workforce needed to accelerate growth in the country's textile, apparel and creative industries.
The initiative will train designers, merchandisers and brand builders capable of competing in regional and global markets, while supporting Rwanda's ambition to become a leading hub for fashion and creative entrepreneurship in Africa.

1. Students will earn an American university degree
Graduates will receive a Kent State University degree recognized in both Rwanda and the United States.
The qualification will be equivalent to degrees awarded on the university&039;s U.S. campuses, meaning students will study under the same academic standards while earning an internationally recognized credential.
2. Rwanda will host Kent State's only full degree programme outside the U.S.
The Rwanda campus will become home to Kent State University's only full degree-granting programme outside the United States.
University officials said Rwanda was selected because of its strong record in education, human capital development and long-term investment in skills training. The programme is expected to position the country as a regional hub for fashion education.

3. Two degree pathways will be offered
Students will be able to choose between fashion Design and Fashion Merchandising.
Fashion Design will focus on garment creation, product development and creative innovation, while Fashion Merchandising will cover branding, marketing, retail management and bringing products to market.
The goal is to produce graduates who understand both the creative and commercial sides of the fashion industry.
4. The first intake will be limited to 60 students
The programme will launch with an inaugural cohort of 60 students across the two degree pathways.
Kent State plans to gradually expand enrolment, with student numbers expected to reach approximately 220 within the next three years.
5. Students from all academic backgrounds can apply
Applicants do not need prior fashion experience or a specific subject combination to qualify.
The programme is open to students from both science and arts backgrounds, provided they meet the academic entry requirements and demonstrate strong academic performance.

6. Scholarships will be available
Financial aid opportunities will be offered through third-party partners working with the university, including collaborations with the Government of Rwanda through the Ministry of Education.
The scholarships are intended to increase access for talented students who may face financial barriers.
7. Industry partners will support practical training
Fashion companies and industry stakeholders will help train students through internships, mentorship programmes and workplace learning opportunities.
However, admission decisions will remain based on academic qualifications and student potential rather than industry recommendations.
8. The partnership extends beyond degree programmes
The collaboration between Kent State University and the Government of Rwanda will also include short courses, executive training and industry-focused programmes.
These initiatives are designed to strengthen skills across Rwanda's broader fashion and creative ecosystem.
9. Local fashion businesses will gain international exposure
The partnership aims to create links between Rwanda's fashion sector and international markets, particularly in the United States.
Through trade exchanges, industry collaborations and networking opportunities, local designers and businesses will have greater access to global platforms and partnerships.
10. The programme will strengthen Rwanda's fashion value chain
Beyond training students, the initiative is expected to support the growth of Rwanda's textile and garment industry by developing expertise in design, merchandising, branding and market development.
By improving how fashion products are created, marketed and distributed, the programme aims to make Made-in-Rwanda brands more competitive both locally and internationally.
