Former sports journalist and administrator Fidèle Kajugiro Sebalinda was laid to rest on Monday at Rusororo Cemetery in Gasabo District, as family members, friends and members of Rwanda's sports community gathered to pay their final respects.
The burial brought together athletes, journalists, sports administrators and relatives who came to honour the life of a man widely remembered for his dedication to sports, media and mentorship.
Emotions ran high as tributes poured in for Sebalinda, who was regarded as one of Rwanda's most professional and versatile sports journalists, particularly during his time at the former Office Rwandais d'Information (ORINFOR).
Sebalinda, who passed away on June 13 at the age of 60 due to illness, was a respected and influential figure in the country&039;s sporting landscape.
Before building a distinguished career in journalism, he was an accomplished volleyball player, excelling as both a setter and libero. He later transitioned into coaching and served as head coach of Les Colombes Volleyball Club, where he played a key role in nurturing young talent while promoting discipline, teamwork and sportsmanship.
In the media, Sebalinda earned widespread recognition as one of the finest sports commentators on Radio Rwanda, admired for his knowledge of the game and ability to connect with audiences.
Beyond journalism, he served as Director of Sports Development at the Rwanda National Olympic and Sports Committee (CNOSR), working closely with sports federations and institutions to advance athlete development and strengthen sports structures across the country.
Speaking during the funeral service, his elder brother, Antoine Sebalinda, described him as a man of integrity whose life was defined by service to others.
"Fidele was more than a colleague. He was a brother to many of us. He believed that sports build character and unity. That is the legacy he leaves behind," he said.
Family members noted that Sebalinda's passion for sports never diminished. Even in his later years, he remained actively involved in the sporting community—attending matches, supporting teams and encouraging young athletes to pursue excellence, teamwork and respect.
His passing has prompted an outpouring of condolences from sports federations, clubs and associations, all acknowledging his significant contribution to the growth and development of sports in Rwanda.
Many remembered him as a humble, hardworking professional whose commitment to fair play, excellence and service left a lasting impact on generations of athletes, journalists and sports administrators.
