Keir Starmer announced his resignation as British Prime Minister and leader of the Labour Party on Monday, June 22, local media reported.
Starmer, who took office in July 2024 after Labour’s landslide general election victory, made the announcement outside 10 Downing Street.

He said he would remain in post until a new leader is elected and would ensure a new prime minister is in place before Parliament returns in September.
The decision comes amid mounting pressure within the Labour Party following disappointing local election results and a significant by-election loss in Makerfield. For weeks, several senior Labour figures and cabinet ministers had urged Starmer to set a clear timetable for his departure.
Andy Burnham has emerged as the frontrunner to succeed him.
Starmer led Labour to a decisive victory in the 2024 general election, ending 14 years of Conservative-led governments.
The Labour Party is expected to begin its leadership selection process shortly, aiming for an orderly handover.
