NYAGATARE – Police in Gatunda sector Nyagatare district are holding a woman in connection with stoning a survivor’s house in the area.

Police identified the suspect as Esteri Mukamurigo, a resident of Rwimiyaga sector in the same district. Police sources at Gatunda Police Station told The New Times on Thursday that the suspect confessed to pelting stones at Liberata Nyirambibi’s house, a genocide survivor.

‘Upon being arrested she confessed to the crime and asked for forgiveness. But currently she is denying it,’ police said.

However, in an interview, Mukamurigo, who currently rents Nyirambibi’s house, said that she had confessed due to the pressure from her neighbours.

‘I accepted because I was very scared after they raided my house,’ she said.

Other sources added that Mukamurigo had even signed a statements admitting to uprooting cassava plantations belonging to the survivor.

During the mourning week closure in Gatunda sector, the district Mayor Fred Atuhe Sabiti warned residents against spreading genocide ideology.
