President Paul Kagame on Sunday, June 14, held separate meetings with Commonwealth Secretary-General Shirley Botchwey and the European Union Special Representative for the Great Lakes Region, Ambassador Johan Borgstam, with discussions focusing on strengthening partnerships and addressing regional security challenges.
President Kagame's meeting with Botchwey centered on enhancing cooperation between Rwanda and the Commonwealth, as well as preparations for the upcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) 2026.

Botchwey was in Rwanda on a working visit, her first official trip to the country since assuming office as Secretary-General of the Commonwealth in April 2025.
Botchwey has also held meetings with various government officials, including the chief executive officers at Rwanda Development Board and Rwanda Governance Board.
President Kagame also received Ambassador Johan Borgstam, the European Union Special Representative for the Great Lakes Region.
According to Village Urugwiro, their discussions focused on developments in the Great Lakes region, including efforts to address the ongoing conflict in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
The two leaders underscored the need for concrete action to tackle the root causes of the crisis and advance a sustainable path towards peace and stability in the region.
