The 2026 FIFA World Cup got underway with co-hosts Mexico securing a 2-0 victory over South Africa in the tournament opener at Mexico City Stadium.

Julian Quiñones gave the hosts the lead in the first half before Raul Jiménez sealed the win after the break in a dramatic contest that produced three red cards.

South Africa's Sphephelo Sithole and Themba Zwane were both sent off, reducing Bafana Bafana to nine men, while Mexico defender César Montes also saw red in stoppage time.

The victory gives Mexico a strong start ahead of their next Group A match against Korea Republic, while South Africa face an uphill task to recover from a disappointing opening defeat.

One of the loudest cheers of the evening came when 17-year-old Gilberto Mora entered the match shortly before Jiménez doubled Mexico's advantage.

The attacking midfielder, regarded as one of Mexico's brightest young talents, is the youngest player at the 2026 World Cup.

With South Africa down to nine men, Mora was given the perfect stage to showcase his talent as Mexico comfortably saw out the victory.
