THE Confederation of East and Central Africa Football (Cecafa) is expected to meet and decide on whether an annual memorial tournament in honour of victims of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi can be incorporated into the association’s annual calendar.

In a brief phone interview with Times Sport, the body’s chief and Tanzania Football Federation (TFF) president Leodegar Tenga said that it is important for the region to remember the atrocities which happened in Rwanda in 1994.

"We should organize a tournament to remember all those who perished in the genocide while also using the forum to fight genocide ideologies,” Tenga stressed.

"We will talk to member states as well as Rwanda’s football body (Ferwafa) to see how best the tournament can be incorporated in our calendar.” 

The 1994 atrocious killings happened at a time when Rayon Sport were preparing for their second round Caf Champions League tie against Kenya Breweries Ltd. 

The Blues went on to miss the tie granting the Kenyan outfit a free pass to the next round of what still stands out as Africa’s premier club championship.
