RECO-RWASCO has embarked on works to repair the broken Nyabugogo water pipe, through which almost a quarter of the volume of water supplied within Kigali City is channelled.

Theoneste Minani, the Water Department Director at RWASCO, said that besides repairing the pipe, they will also divert its route to mitigate the high pressure it has been subjected, especially in the waterlogged Nyabugogo swamp.

"The pipe was under a lot of pressure in this area. The alternative we have is to change its route and put it on a higher altitude where it won’t face too much pressure,” he said.

"However, we have to work with area leaders to see how people can be expropriated from the designated route. The faster this phase goes, the faster the completion of the repairs”.

He added that due to the broken pipe, city suburbs like Kicukiro, Gisozi, Remera, Rwampara, Mburabuturo and Kinyinya have been hit by water shortage for the past few days.

"We are working hard to see that the pipe is fixed so that the affected population can access water,” Minani stated.
