RUTSIRO - As four more bodies of victims of last week’s boat accident in Lake Kivu were retrieved yesterday, Police has said that an in-depth investigation into the exact cause of the accident is still going on.

The retrieved quartet includes two policemen, a nun identified as Valerie Dusabemariya and a health worker at Mushubati Health Centre also identified as Patrick Munyaneza.

This brings the total number of recovered bodies to 10, with the same number of people are still missing after a boat in which mourners headed to Nyamunini Island for the 16th commemoration of the Genocide against the Tutsi capsized.

Speaking to The New Times yesterday, police spokesperson, Erick Kayiranga, said that a joint team of expert investigators and police detectives were yet to identify the exact cause of the accident.

"We have so far confirmed that climatic conditions were not good at the time of the accident but a team of experts will soon establish if there are other factors that could have contributed to the occurrence of the accident,” Kayiranga said by telephone.

He stressed that the matter was still being treated as an accident and no arrests have been made yet but he did not rule out the possibility of holding some people accountable.
Meanwhile the local authorities of Rutsiro district have started an initiative of visiting and comforting the bereaved families.

"As we continue to strengthen the families of the deceased, we also have  guarantee that the Social Security Fund of Rwanda will compensate families of those who were public servants,” Jean Damascène Nsanzimfura, the vice mayor in charge of economic development said.
