HUYE – A third year Law student at the National University of Rwanda has been identified as one the six victims who have been confirmed dead after been involved  in Wednesday’s boat mishap on Lake Kivu.

Pierre Habinshuti, 44, was one of the people aboard the ill-fated engine boat which was heading to Nyamunini Island on Lake Kivu to honor Genocide victims who were killed and dumped into the lake in 1994.

Out of the 70 people who were involved in the boat accident, 50 survived while  15 others have not yet been accounted for.

"He was a very active student, he made class debates lively with his constant questioning,” Augustine Muhirwa, the third year Law class representative (CP), said of the deceased. He is survived by a wife and six children.

In a separate interview, Dr Emmanuel Ugirashebuja, the Dean of the Faculty of Law, expressed his condolences to the bereaved family. He said that Habinshuti was an exemplary student.

The deceased was laid to rest in his home district in Rutsiro, in the Western Province.
