KAYONZA –Mourners who gathered at the shores of Lake Muhazi for the 16th commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi on Wednesday, raised over Rwf 120,000 in cash during a mini-fund raising drive towards the support of three genocide survivors living in Rukara sector, Kayonza district.

The district Mayor, Damas Muhororo, urged people to develop a culture of supporting the needy to complement the government’s assistance programmes.

"As we remember the tragedy that befell our country, we should also be able to handle the aftermath of the Genocide in a more responsible manner. The support we are collecting is meant to assist three Genocide survivors who are in dire need of help,” he said.

The Vice Mayor in charge of Social Affairs, Anita Mutesi commended Kayonza residents for their generous spirit. 
Augustine Ndinda, the acting area Executive Secretary, said the residents’ contribution would help the beneficiaries cater for their basic needs.

"There are three elderly people in my area who need special attention. The Genocide left them with nothing.

Their houses were torched, all their children were killed right here, they were beaten and left to die a slow painful death. So, we need to keep our eyes on them always,” he said.
