Rwanda national team head coach Carlos Alos Ferrer has heaped praise on Morocco’s incredible campaign at the 2022 FIFA World Cup coming to a close Sunday in Qatar.

Morocco made history by becoming the first African country to reach the semifinals of the FIFA World Cup.

They were touted underdogs from the group stages and no one, including themselves, believed they would reach that far until France beat them 2-0 to knock them out.

Ferrer, who previously coached FAR Rabat in the North African country, said he wasn’t surprised to see Morocco reaching the semifinals of the world’s most prestigious football tournament given the current football structures that the country has put in place.

"Moroccan football players are working so hard even at club level. Concerning the national team, their players are in top leagues all over Europe and they are improving their level." The Spanish gaffer told Times Sport in an interview.

"What Morocco has done at the World Cup is fantastic. It is not only up for them to celebrate as a country but for Africa as a continent.

"Senegal also qualified to the second round without Sadio Mane. The two countries made Africa proud. I am very sure many African countries will do well in the 2026 World Cup," he added.

Ferrer, who previously coached FAR Rabat, also hailed former rival Walid Regragui with whom they share memories on and off the pitch when the Moroccan coach and was the head coach of city rivals FUS Rabat.

"I know Walid Regragui very well, he was in FUS Rabat when I was at FAR Rabat. He is a very disciplined coach,” he said of Walid.

With Walid, he said, "They showed their pedigree by winning a very difficult group involving Belgium, Croatia and Canada. Morocco kept going as they beat Spain and Portugal"

"Generally it has been a very good tournament for them and I am not shocked by what they have done because they have high intensity. I am very happy for them," he added.

Morocco lost 2-0 to France on Wednesday night in the semifinals despite dominating possession. They will now face Croatia on Saturday, December 17 in the third place match.
