A wonder-goal by Arjen Robben ended 10-man Manchester United’s involvement in the Champions League as Bayern Munich lost 3-2 at Old Trafford but went through on the away goals rule.

Wayne Rooney made a dramatic return to action but he could not prevent United exiting the competition after Robben’s stunning volley on 74 minutes pulled the Bundesliga side level at 4-4 on aggregate - and sent them into the semi-finals thanks to their extra away goal.

Darron Gibson had given United the perfect start after just three minutes and when Nani struck twice more to put United into a 3-0 lead on 41 minutes, the Premier League champions appeared set to overturn a 2-1 deficit from the first leg and progress into the last four.

But Ivica Olic got Bayern back into the tie just ahead of the break and Bayern were able to take full advantage of Rafael Da Silva’s dismissal for a second booking on 50 minutes with former Chelsea player Robben delivering the telling blow.

United were handed a massive boost prior to kick-off with the news that Rooney had made a miraculous recovery from the ankle injury that only seven days previously had ruled him out for "two to three weeks”.
