Unity SC have withdrawn from the 2026/27 BK Pro League after securing promotion, citing financial constraints and a need to focus on youth development.
The club formally informed the Rwanda Football Association (FERWAFA) of its decision within the 14-day deadline given to promoted teams to confirm participation.
Club president Emmanuel Kagarama said budget limitations and the club’s long-term development strategy influenced the move.
"There are several reasons, but the main ones are budgetary challenges and our long-term approach to talent development,” Kagarama said.
He explained that competing in the top flight requires financial and logistical resources beyond what the club and its sponsor are prepared to provide.
"When we spoke with our sponsors, they made it clear that the priority is not promotion, but the development of Rwandan youth football,” he added.
Unity SC earned promotion after finishing second in the Second Division play-offs behind Sunrise FC.
Kagarama noted that the club sees itself as a pathway for young players to move to stronger local and international teams.
With Unity SC stepping aside, third-placed Etoile de l’Est are expected to replace them.
FERWAFA officials said they had received the withdrawal letter and they are reviewing the next steps.
The 2026/27 BK Pro League season is scheduled to run from September 4 this year to May 30 next year.
