THE first ever national table tennis championship rolls off today with six teams in action.

National Bank of Rwanda (BNR) plays Inkurunziza at Cercle Sportif; Esperance takes on Rafiki at Kimisagara, while Remera play Delta.

National University of Rwanda (UNR) has a rest day.
Celestin Nizeyimana, one of the championship organizers also said that the federation plans to introduce the sport in schools later this year.

"Once we have a consignment of tables, nets and balls from our sponsor Pascal Kronenberger, we will start touring different primary and secondary schools.”

The sport has been on the rise in recent years with the national team taking part in the 2003 and 2007 All Africa Games in Abuja and Algeria respectively.

The team also participated in last year’s Francophone Games.
