NYAGATARE - Trauma Counsellors from all Sectors of Nyagatare District were on Tuesday trained on how to manage trauma cases that are expected to increase during the 16th commemoration of the Genocide against Tutsi. 

Dr. Celestin Sebuhoro, a CNLG psychotherapist, said that the training, the first of its kind, will cover several parts of the country ahead of the commemoration week scheduled to start on April 7.

"This training was organized after findings that many cases of trauma occur during the commemoration week,” Sebuhoro said.

"It is aimed at equipping grassroots councillors with basic knowledge on how they should handle a traumatised person”.

Desire Gakwisi, a participant and an official in charge of mental healthcare at Nyagatare Hospital, said that the training was timely and resourceful

"I receive more than twenty mental and trauma cases during genocide commemoration week. But with this training, there are a number of new skills I have received that will guide me in handling these cases,” he said.  

Nyagatare vice Mayor in charge of Social Affairs, Rebecca Karungi, requested the trainees to put more efforts in mobilising the local population to turn up for the commemoration week. 

The training was organized by the National Commission for the Fight Against Genocide (CNLG).
