Elections for the next president of Rwanda Cycling Union (RCU) will take place on December 26, it has been confirmed.

According to Bosco Nemba, RCU Secretary General, the elections would have to come after all clubs have acquired legal status.

"We want to have the elections when clubs have attained their legal status,” Nemba said, adding that every candidate must be a member of a certain club.”

The elections had earlier been scheduled for December 16 at Amahoro Stadium but were pushed forwards to give the clubs room to finalize their registration.

No potential candidates have shown interest in contesting the current president Charles Kamanda who has been at the helm since 2003.

However, he could face still challenge from Hotel Credo proprietor, Francois Rutayisire who has been promised support by some clubs.

Sources indicate that Kamanda may not seek another term of office due to other personal commitments in addition to his position as a parliamentarian.

Kamanda was elected late 2003 in Isovu in the Southern Provinces for a three year term in office but has been played down by some clubs on issues of not being transparent.

 "We are not going to elect him if he stands again. He must first show what he has done for the sport since he took that office,” said Cine Elmay coach, Abouba Sebucanda. There are currently four cycling Clubs in the country, which include; Cine Elmay, Club l’Est, Huye and Mutara.

However, Nemba revealed that plans are under way to have at least 30 clubs throughout the country by the end of next year.

"We are going to work with sports directors at the lower levels to achieve this,” Nemba said adding that those who are currently members of the existing clubs are eligible to stand in the December 26 elections.
