APR WVC were crowned champions of the 2025/26 Rwanda National Women’s Volleyball League after defeating Kepler in a thrilling five-set encounter at Petit Stade on Saturday.
The army side sealed the title by winning Game 3 of the women’s finals in a dramatic tie-breaker, 22-25, 25-17, 25-20, 16-25, 15-10, to complete a clean sweep of the series.
APR began the match in dominant fashion, racing to a commanding 9-0 lead in the opening set. However, Kepler quickly regrouped defensively and relied on star player Binta Fatoumata to spark a comeback. Her powerful attacks, combined with Violet Makuto’s sharp spikes, inspired Kepler to overturn the deficit and claim the set 25-22.
APR responded strongly in the second set after coach Justin Kigwari introduced Amito Sharon to reinforce the middle defense. Experienced player Lizzy Gasekgonwe, the former RRA captain, also played a key role as APR comfortably took the set 25-17 to level the match at 1-1.
The defending champions maintained their momentum in the third set, continuing to trouble Kepler coach Florien Siborurema with disciplined defending and improved organization. Libero Fillette Uzamukunda provided stability at the back as APR capitalized on Kepler’s struggles under pressure to win the set 25-20.
Kepler bounced back strongly in the fourth set, dominating APR 25-16 to force a decisive fifth set. But APR returned with greater composure and determination in the tie-break, eventually sealing the championship with a 15-10 victory.
APR captain Valentine Munezero praised the team’s victory and credited the coach’s tactical adjustments, particularly the decision to field Gasekgonwe after a lengthy absence from the starting lineup.
"First, it’s a huge win to celebrate. I thank APR fans for the support. Looking at our coach’s adjustment, it was fantastic and well thought out. I also trusted Lizzy, so it was amazing,” she said.
