Rayon Sports FC suffered a major setback in their pursuit of the BK Pro League title after a shock 1-0 defeat to bottom-placed AS Muhanga at Muhanga Stadium on Wednesday.

Francis Haringingo’s Blues went into the match knowing a win would help them close the gap on second-placed APR FC and keep their title hopes alive. Instead, they were stunned just a minute into the game when Fabrice Martin Twagizimana scored the decisive goal to hand AS Muhanga an early lead they never relinquished.

Despite several attempts to get back into the match, Rayon Sports were denied on multiple occasions and failed to find an equaliser. The defeat leaves them fourth in the standings with 48 points from 30 matches.

AS Muhanga, who remain near the bottom of the table alongside Etincelles FC, boosted their survival hopes with the crucial win.

The result also allows defending champions APR FC to maintain an eight-point cushion, before their clash against league leaders Al Hilal at Kigali Pele Stadium on Thursday.

With four games remaining, Rayon Sports still have 12 points to play for, with fixtures against Marine FC, Gorilla FC, Bugesera FC, and Kiyovu Sports—all sides that have historically proven challenging opponents.

Meanwhile, APR FC have five matches left, including ties against AS Kigali, Rutsiro FC, Gicumbi FC, as well as regional clashes against Sudanese sides Al Hilal and Al Merrikh.

Rayon Sports were also hit by injury blow with Fall Ngagne now ruled out for the rest of the season after he left the pitch in Muhanga with a broken ankle.

He joins the likes of Youssou Diagne (illness), Richard Ndayishimiye (leg injury), Asman Ndikumana (minor injury), and Ramazani Tshimanga (leg injury) who also missed the match.

In other league matches, Bugesera FC suffered a heavy 4-0 home defeat to Marine FC in Nyamata, while Gorilla FC edged AS Kigali 2-1 at Kigali Pele Stadium. Mukura VS played out a goalless draw with Police FC, and Rutsiro FC also settled for a 0-0 draw against Musanze FC.

Elsewhere, Landja Bulaya scored the only goal as Kiyovu Sports secured a 1-0 win over Amagaju FC at Kamena Stadium. The victory lifted Kiyovu to fifth place with 47 points, while Amagaju remain 15th with 28 points.
