Staff and management of Sustainable Growers on Tuesday, April 28, joined Rwandans in paying tribute to victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi with a visit Kigali Genocide Memorial, as the country continues activities marking Kwibuka32.
The team laid a wreath at the memorial and observed a moment of silence in honour of more than one million lives lost during the Genocide. The memorial is a final resting place of over 250,000 victims and serves as a centre for remembrance and education.
During the visit, members of the organisation were taken through the history of the Genocide and the significance of the memorial in preserving memory and promoting the "Never Again” message, which affirms the commitment to prevent the recurrence of such atrocities.
Officials from Sustainable Growers said the visit was aimed at standing in solidarity with Rwandans during the 100 days of commemoration.
"Commemoration keeps alive our collective responsibility,” the organisation stated, observing that the experience reinforces the need to uphold values of humanity, dignity and unity.
In a gesture of remembrance and solidarity, Sustainable Growers extended financial donation to the memorial, helping sustain its mission to preserve history and educate future generations.
Christine Condo, Sustainable Growers Chief Executive Officer, said remembrance is a shared responsibility for all individuals and institutions operating in Rwanda.
"Kwibuka — to remember, is not only Rwanda’s call. It is a call to every person and every organisation that calls this country home to stand alongside its people and renew commitment to values that make ‘Never Again’ more than words,” she said.
Founded in 2013, Sustainable Growers works with smallholder women coffee farmers in Rwanda, DR Congo, and Tanzania, providing training and facilitating access to markets.
The organisation says it has so far supported over 76,000 women farmers, contributing to increased crop value and improved livelihoods for more than 383,000 household members.
