Maize fields in Eastern Province

Editor,
I was happy to read that the government announced that it is going to buy the previous season’s maize harvest produced by farmers in Nyagatare District.

This initiative came after numerous complaints by farmers, saying that they had produced a lot of maize but lacked markets.

The excess production of maize was probably due to the effectiveness of the government policy of land consolidation and planting of appropriate crops.

This move is good because it will help keep prices stable in case of supply shortage since the government will be able to put the stored maize on the market.

Secondly, farmers will get a fair price for their maize and will not be at the mercy of exploitative middlemen.
