Rwanda’s ambitions to diversify its tourism and agribusiness sectors could soon take a distinctive turn, as plans emerge for the country’s first-ever vineyard estate.

On April 24, Arthur Asiimwe, the Deputy Chief of Mission at Rwanda’s Embassy in Washington, DC, met with investors behind VINMUSA, a proposed vineyard estate project in Rwanda focused on wine production, hospitality, and tourism development. VINMUSA is set to become Rwanda’s first vineyard estate.

This development signals a new frontier in high-value agriculture and tourism experiences.

A vineyard estate is a property where wine grapes are grown and processed into wine on-site, typically under a single ownership structure, often integrating production with tourism and hospitality experiences.

The plans come at a time when the wine industry remains largely underdeveloped in Rwanda.

In 2019, Rwanda and the Rhineland-Palatinate committed to promoting cooperation in agriculture mainly in technology-driven farming, and sustainable winegrowing - the cultivation and harvesting of grapes.

In the deal, Germany – ranked tenth among the top 15 global wine producing countries, by volume – committed to help Rwanda with the requisite state-of-the-art technology, research and expertise to start growing grapes that are used as the main source of red wine, white wine, and rosé wines on the global market.
