NGOMA – Local district authorities have unveiled plans to build a new Genocide memorial centre in Rukumberi sector.
Speaking at a preparatory meeting for the forth- coming commemoration period, the Ngoma district Mayor, François Niyotwagira, asked sector leaders to start identifying remains of genocide victims that need decent reburial.

"Having a general district memorial site, shouldn’t distract us from maintaining the small exiting ones,” he said.

MP Vénérande Nyirahirwa, who also attended the meeting, explained that Rukumberi was chosen as the suitable site for the district’s memorial because of the sector’s bad legacy during the genocide.

"Rukumberi is one of the areas where many Tutsi were killed during the genocide. For that matter it should be the district’s memorial site,” she said.

Alphonse Zigira, a security official in the district, reminded residents to continue the fight against genocide ideology in the communities.

"It is important that we uproot genocide ideology so that what happened never occurs again,” he said.
