An employee of the fire department of the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) is in police custody after he beat his wife and inflicted on her several injuries. She was rushed to the Central Hospital of Kigali (CHK).

Joshua Nkurunziza, a resident of Gasaraba village, Nyarugunga sector, Kicukiro District, is currently detained at Kanombe police post after his 10-year old child and the house help alerted neighbours.

Efforts to get a comment from the Gender Based Violence (GBV) department in the police were futile as they weren’t forthcoming with details.

A person who is familiar with Nkurunziza, said the suspect, a former soldier, was drunk at the time of the fight.

"He came home drunk and he started beating his wife.  We don’t know what he was accusing her of, but he’s fond of beating her every time he comes home drunk,” he said.

Family members said they have advised Nkurunziza’s wife to divorce but she refused because she did not want to leave her children.

"We have always told her to leave him but she continued telling us that things would work out with time and that she cannot abandon her children,” a family member said.
