The AYuTe (Agriculture, Youth and Technology) Africa Challenge Rwanda 2026, Heifer International’s flagship agritech innovation programme, has selected 12 youth-led startups to participate in a five-day intensive bootcamp, marking a key milestone on the road to the competition’s grand finale.

This year’s challenge attracted over 1,200 applications from young Rwandan innovators aged 18 to 35, each proposing technology-driven solutions to address critical challenges facing smallholder farmers. Following a rigorous screening and due diligence process, 12 of the most promising candidates were selected to advance to the bootcamp stage.

Participants will receive mentorship, tailored business development support, financial planning guidance, and valuable networking opportunities with industry leaders.

Running from April 20 to 24, 2026, the bootcamp is designed to equip finalists with the tools, insights, and networks needed to scale their businesses and attract investment. Participants will receive mentorship, tailored business development support, financial planning guidance, and valuable networking opportunities with industry leaders.

"We recognised a gap between where our selected innovators are and where they need to be to scale their solutions effectively. This bootcamp is designed to close that gap. We expect participants to arrive as promising entrepreneurs and leave as investment-ready, market-smart agritech leaders equipped to drive meaningful change for Rwanda’s smallholder farmers,” said Verena Ruzibuka, Country Director of Heifer International Rwanda.

Running from April 20 to 24, 2026, the bootcamp is designed to equip finalists with the tools, insights, and networks needed to scale their businesses and attract investment.

Ruzibuka emphasised the broader significance of the initiative, adding:

"The AYuTe Challenge continues to demonstrate the power of youth-led innovation in transforming agriculture. By investing in these 12 finalists, we are not only supporting individual enterprises but also strengthening Rwanda’s agricultural ecosystem—creating jobs, improving farmer livelihoods, and building more resilient food systems for the future.”

"Being selected for the AYuTe bootcamp is a significant milestone for us. It gives us access to mentorship, networks, and practical skills that will help us refine our solution and scale our impact on smallholder farmers. We are excited to learn, grow, and compete at the next level.”

Throughout the programme, innovators will participate in workshops focused on business model refinement, investor readiness, and market strategy. The bootcamp will culminate in a high-stakes pitch competition, where finalists will present their solutions to a panel of judges. Five finalists will advance to the Grand Finale.

Rwf65 million prize pool underscores growing support for youth-led agritech innovation in Rwanda

The 2026 edition of the AYuTe Challenge offers a total cash prize of Rwf65 million, up from Rwf50 million in 2025, reflecting a strengthened commitment to supporting youth-led agribusiness innovation in Rwanda.

The AYuTe Challenge is designed to identify and support scalable enterprises that drive productivity, increase farmer incomes, and build resilience across agricultural value chains. Previous participants have leveraged the platform to expand operations, create jobs, and strengthen partnerships with farmers and other stakeholders nationwide.

The selected cohort represents a new generation of innovators with the potential to transform Rwanda’s food systems and accelerate inclusive agricultural growth.
