NYAGATARE – Farmers in Nyagatare district will soon acquire a  maize drier to facilitate storage of their harvests, an official has disclosed.

Enock Byabashaija, the district vice Mayor in charge of Economic Affairs, said the Rwf65 machine was procured by the district.

‘It will be soon available to farmers in order to enable better storage of their maize harvest,’ he said, adding that the machine can be adjusted to recommended temperatures suitable for the maize harvest.

‘For maize grains to be stored, it requires  suitable temperatures. This is why the district decided to buy this machine,’ he added.

The development comes amidst reports that a portion of the farmers’ produce was going to waste during the rainy season.

‘We dry our maize from paved grounds that are even inadequate for our harvests. We lose tonnes of maize when it rains sometimes,’ Emmanuel Gaserege, one of the maize farmers in Cyabayaga said.

Other farmers commended the district for buying the machine.

‘We are really happy that the district bought us this machine. It will encourage us to produce more since we have been planting maize according to our previously limited drying capacities,’ one of the farmers said.
