69-year- old scoops excellence award

KARONGI – The local leadership of Karongi district on Monday rewarded a 69-year old woman for her excellence in creating developmental projects that have helped raise others out of poverty. Jeanne Mukakarera, was handed a certificate of merit and Rwf300, 000 at a colourful ceremony to mark the district Women’s Day celebrations in Gitesi Sector, Karongi district.

KARONGI – The local leadership of Karongi district on Monday rewarded a 69-year old woman for her excellence in creating developmental projects that have helped raise others out of poverty.

Jeanne Mukakarera, was handed a certificate of merit and Rwf300, 000 at a colourful ceremony to mark the district Women’s Day celebrations in Gitesi Sector, Karongi district.

Mukakarera owns large scale fruit plantations and poultry farms. She also owns other domestic animals. Last year, she donated 18 cows to poor families as a way of helping them out of poverty.

While presenting her with the rewards, amid acclaim from a cheering public, Dative Mukabalisa, the District vice Mayor in charge of social affairs challenged the residents to emulate Mukakarera.

"At her age, Jean is still a very hardworking woman. She is a practical example that we should all strive to emulate,” Mukabalisa said.

Speaking to The New Times, Mukakarera attributed her success to her children and all well wishers ‘who never stop being by her side.’
