Editor,

The New Times recently reported that La Colombiere, a well known city school, may be relocated, if a demarcation exercise that is being done by Kigali City Council, identifies the school as being in a high risk-area.

The Rwanda Environment Management Authority rightly instructed the KCC to relocate all people and structures in the Kacyiru wetland, Kamutwa cell in Kigugu village. This area suffered from the effects of a heavy downpour that left three dead and hundreds homeless.

According to the Kigali City vice Mayor in charge of Finance and Economic Development, Alphonse Nizeyimana,  the wetland boundaries are being demarcated and all those who will fall within the boundary will be relocated. I think that this entire process has been going on for too long.

Wetlands must be protected but its obvious that they aren’t. The industrial area is in a wetland and so is the Nyabugogo area.

These areas are full of pollutants but nothing is done about them. Its time that REMA revealed its might to protect our wetlands.
