Long time ago, the banks of Lake Muhazi had very green pastures. For that reason herdsmen would take their animals there for grazing.

One day, a herdsman called Gahigi met an old woman as he was taking his animals to graze.  "My son be very careful because there is a very fierce animal inside the lake and it eats goats,” the old woman advised Gahigi.

Gahigi was afraid but continued on his way to the green pasture land.

In the evening, Gahigi realized that one of his goats was missing. He started looking for it everywhere, but he did not find it.

When he reached home, he told his father about the missing goat, and about the old woman who had warned him earlier about the fierce animal that lives inside Lake Muhazi.

After that, Gahigi and his father decided to go to the lake and look for the animal which ate their goat. When they reached, the fierce animal brought its head out of the water.

Gahigi tried to spear the animal but it went back in the water. It came out again and this time Gahigi got his father’s spear and pierced it in the mouth.

It made a terrible noise and sunk to the bottom of the lake.
Because of his bravery, Gahigi was famous. From that time on, all the villages around Lake Muhazi were peaceful and not scared of the fierce animal.
