Sports Minister Nelly Mukazayire has pledged that full support for RSSB Tigers and urged the team to represent to country with pride ahead of its debut appearance at the Basketball Africa League 2026 (BAL).

The local basketball governing body, FERWABA, designated the Tigers to replace APR BBC in the Kalahari Conference, which will run from March 27 to April 5 in Pretoria, South Africa. APR withdrew from the competition a fortnight ago.

Mukazayire visited the Rwanda Cup 2025 winners’ training camp at Petit Stade on Tuesday, March 24, and praised the team for stepping up on short notice to represent the country.

Mukazayire has pledged that full support for RSSB Tigers and urged the team to represent to country.

"Given the circumstances of the past two weeks, I would like to thank each of the players, the coaches, and the technical team for your flexibility and determination in forming the team we have today,” she said.

"I strongly believe that out of adversity comes resilience and even more special things. I believe we have the best team we’ve ever had,” she added.

The minister, together with the federation, pledged full support to ensure the Tigers have everything they need for the competition.

"Approach every single game like champions and make sure your response is felt in everything you do. I am here to support you—if there’s anything more you need or wish to share, don’t hesitate,” Mukazayire said.

Led by head coach Henry Mwinuka, assisted by James Maye Jr and Kenny Gasana, the Tigers will compete against Libya’s Al Ahly Benghazi, Johannesburg Giants, Dar City, Nairobi City Thunder, and defending champions Petro de Luanda.

Head coach Mwinuka said the team is motivated by the support it has received despite limited preparation time.

"We had a short time to prepare, but the chemistry has been very good. I believe the team is ready,” he noted.

Team captain Antino Jackson also expressed confidence:

"Everybody is on the same page, and I think we are ready to play.”
