Rwanda international goalkeeper Olivier Kwizera has spoken out after being left out of the national team, Amavubi, saying he remains focused and determined to earn a recall.
Kwizera, who recently scored in a penalty shootout as Rayon Sports FC beat Police FC in the Peace Cup quarterfinal at Kigali Pelé Stadium on Thursday night, believes he still has what it takes to return to the national team.
The goalkeeper played a key role in helping Rayon Sports eliminate Police FC and reach the semifinals, where they will face Gorilla FC.
"After spending a year without a team, I am happy to now be helping Rayon Sports. I believe this is a good step for me to grow. I’m happy with how I am playing, and the club still needs me,” he said.
On his omission from the national squad, Kwizera remained composed, emphasizing respect for the coach’s decision while reaffirming his ambition.
"I will continue doing what I have to do, and when the time comes, I will be called because I am a Rwandan who loves his country and loves playing for the national team.”
Meanwhile, Lague Byiringiro of Police FC and Hakim Sahabo have returned to the national setup after missing out under former Amavubi coach Adel Amrouche.
The upcoming matches will offer Amavubi valuable preparation as Rwanda builds toward major continental competitions, including the qualifiers for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which will be co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.
The team is expected to enter residential camp later this week at the FERWAFA Hotel.
Rwanda will open their FIFA Series campaign against the Grenada national football team at Amahoro Stadium on March 27.
The two sides are in Group A alongside Kenya and Estonia.
