Kagame congratulates Congo's Sassou-Nguesso on election win

President Paul Kagame has congratulated his counterpart Denis Sassou-Nguesso of the Republic of Congo for his election win.

Provisional results of the March 15 elections showed Sassou-Nguesso with nearly 95% of the vote, winning a fifth term.

"My warmest congratulations to my brother, President Denis Sassou Nguesso, on his re-election at the helm of the Republic of Congo," Kagame wrote in a post on Thursday.

"Rwanda is delighted by the quality of our bilateral relations and the continuation of close cooperation, in service of our shared priorities and the prosperity of our peoples."

Nguesso's closest challenger, Mabio Mavoungou Zinga of the Alliance party, got less than 2%.

Rwanda and Congo-Brazzaville have cooperation in various areas.

Sassou-Nguesso last visited Rwanda in Jul 2023. Kagame awarded the Congolese leader with the National Order of Honour (Agaciro) medal for exceptional leadership and dedication to building a more stable and prosperous Africa.

Kagame had visited Congo in April 2022.

Several agreements have been signed in various sectors including economic cooperation, trade and cultural exchange.
