As Rwandans crush out in quarters

Sudan were crowned champions at the first leg of the International Tennis Federation Junior Circuit that winded-up on Sunday in Nairobi.

Sudan’s top seed Adam Noureldin cruised to a 6-4, 6-1 victory against Ethiopia’s eighth seed Yonas Gebere in the boy’s final shortly before Getu Meron  (Sudan) defeated Ethiopia’s second seed Michael Semira 6-3, 6-2 in the girls’ final.

Meanwhile, Rwanda’s top seeds, Yejala Umumararungu and Prince Ishimwe failed to go past the quarter-final stage of the competition.

Umumararungu was the first to taste defeat when he lost in straight sets to Kenya’s Nikita Dawda. (6-3, 6-0) before Ishimwe followed suit losing to Negasi Biniam 6-4, 6-1.
After the first leg of the U-13 tournament, Umumararungu is ranked 11th while Ishimwe is 13th.

After a weak first leg performance, Rwanda is eyeing an improved show in the second leg which started yesterday at Nairobi’s Heron hotel.

Just like in the first leg, Rwanda is being represented by four players; three boys and one girl.

The two-leg tournament, organized under the auspices of the International Tennis Federation (ITF) is a climax of a six-day camp and has attracted countries from East and Central Africa.

The countries include; Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Burundi, Ethiopia, Libya, Sudan, Seychelles, Eritrea, Djibouti and Rwanda.
