DAVITE Giancarlo got his quest for a maiden African rally crown off to a great start after a second spot finish in the 650km Kobil rally of Tanzania which climaxed yesterday in Mlimani City, Dar es Salaam.

The speedster, who was navigated by Sylvia Vindevogel in a yellow Subaru Impreza N11, came in second place, 27 seconds off the pace, while fellow country mate Fitidis Christakis and Guy Dekelver claimed the final podium slot after clocking 2 hours, 7 minutes and 57 seconds.

"It was a great rally. The roads were good and the weather was perfect,” a thrilled Giancarlo told Times Sport in a phone dialogue. The display underlined a tremendous start to the season for the Italian-born driver, who has won the last two national championships.

Zimbabwe’s James Whyte, who is the defending FIA African Rally Champion, won the event after using 2 hours, 1 minute and 30 seconds.

Of the eleven starters, only four managed to finish the gruelling event, which stands as the opening round of the 2010 ARC contest.
