BUGESERA - An elderly couple  were on Wednesday killed by their own son in Bugesera district.

Marcella Kwizera, 32, allegedly killed Claver Kabora, 66, and Asterie Mukakayonde, 62, his parents, at around 7.30 pm. The grisly incident took place in Gasanga 2 village in Nyamata sector.

Chief Superintendent Gilbert Gumira, the Eastern Region Police Commander (RPC), confirmed the incident. The suspect is currently detained at Nyamata Police Station.

"We are holding him [Kwizera] and another woman called Claudine Mababazi as key suspects while the investigations are going on,” said the police boss.

According to the Nyamata Executive Secretary, Emmanuel Rugamabage, the key suspects were involved in a land dispute with the victims which is being taken as the motive of  the murder.

Rugamabage, added that both victims and their son had a criminal record, from their participation  in the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

"The deceased and his parents had just been released from prison after serving 10 years. They were convicted of genocide crimes committed in Nyamata,” he said.

"It is astonishing to see them involved in other serious crimes after their release. The suspect never got any lesson from prison. He actually needs to be given heavy punishment for the crime he is to be charged with.”

Leonile Naumanzi, the district vice Mayor in charge of Social Affairs, castigated the killings, calling for heavier forms of punishment to deter such cases in future.
