RUHANGO — Three people died instantly Friday afternoon and others sustained serious injuries when two speeding vehicles had a head-on collision on the Butare-Kigali highway.

The fatal accident happened at 3 pm at an S-like road junction in Bisambu village, Munini cell in Ruhango district.
The deceased whose names were not released included a young lady in her 20s, and two elderly women.

They were aboard a Corolla Reg. No RAA 531L reportedly members of same family heading to Burundi, while the other vehicle was a passenger taxi omnibus registration number RAA-033K heading to Kigali.

Police arrived at the scene within ten minutes and with the help of the general public rushed the injured to Kabgayi hospital.

 "The accident was caused by over speeding,’ said the police. "The corolla had lost control before running into the commuter bus”.

Eye witnesses also said that the corolla which had five occupants on board was moving at high speed before it lost control. Only the driver and a child survived.

"It swayed to both sides of the road before hitting the taxi minibus. The latter tried to avoid a head-on collusion but it was too late. We only saw dead bodies and heard people screaming,” said eyewitnesses.

All passengers in the taxi survived but those occupying the front seat sustained severe injuries.
