Communities in South Kivu province in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) are still being subjected to attacks by the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR), a rebel group branded by the UN as a terrorist organization.

Fresh reports indicate that elements of the FDLR have targeted civilians, especially in the highlands of Uvira, a remote area where the Congolese army is allegedly not deployed.

According to reports, the rebels ambush local traders on the way to the markets and rob their merchandise.

Three highland areas – Magunda, Maheta and Nandjale, are particularly said to be occupied by the FDLR who are reported to be pillaging agricultural fields of the local communities.

The FDLR are remnants of former ex-Far and Interahamwe militia who are accused of having masterminded the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi and later fled into eastern DRC.
FDLR leaders are on a UN wanted list.
