One dead, 24 injured in road accident

HUYE/NYAMAGABE - One person was killed and many others injured yesterday at around mid-day when a bus they were travelling in was involved in an accident on the Rusizi-Butare highway. The coaster bus registration number RAB 242 H belonging to Impala Transport Agency, was heading to Kigali from Rusizi when it rammed into a tree after bursting its front tyre.

HUYE/NYAMAGABE - One person was killed and many others injured yesterday at around mid-day when a bus they were travelling in was involved in an accident on the Rusizi-Butare highway.

The coaster bus registration number RAB 242 H belonging to Impala Transport Agency, was heading to Kigali from Rusizi when it rammed into a tree after bursting its front tyre.

The driver of the bus who has been identified as Egide Mutimura died on the spot while the rest were hospitalised.

"The driver started complaining of a bad front tyre immediately after we had come out of Nyungwe National Park,” said Emmanuel Nshimiyimana, who sustained a broken arm.

Nshimyimana who was found at the Butare University Teaching Hospital (CHUB) emergency ward said that the driver lost control of the bus and hit a tree.

"That is all I can recall, after regaining consciousness I found myself in Kigeme hospital with a broken hand, and with a lot of chest and neck pains,” he added.

At the CHUB four people were being treated of open fractures when The New Times checked in the hospital. According to the hospital director, Dr Andre Musemakweli, the patients’ situation is stable.

"All the four people transferred here are being treated by our doctors, we have also sent a team of doctors to beef up treatment efforts at Kigeme hospital,” said Musemakweli.

According to Dr Sixbert Nkurikiyumukiza, the head of Kigeme hospital, all the twenty victims of the accident admitted at the hospital are in stable condition.
