KIGALI - The Minister of Gender and Family Promotion, Jeanne d’Arc Mujawamariya Saturday called upon women to strive for greater empowerment if they are to consolidate their current achievements in gender equality. Speaking during an environmental protection activity organised by the National Women Council in Kimisagara, the Minister commended the efforts fronted by government in the promotion of women empowerment and gender equality. “We have achieved a lot in realising gender equality and girl child education. However, there is still a gap,” the minister said.

Speaking during an environmental protection activity organised by the National Women Council in Kimisagara, the Minister commended the efforts fronted by government in the promotion of women empowerment and gender equality.
"We have achieved a lot in realising gender equality and girl child education. However, there is still a gap,” the minister said.
She called upon women to take advantage of the existing women empowerment programs and institutions like cooperatives to promote their livelihoods and improve their family lives.
"Our government is sensitive about the welfare of women and bridging the gender gap. It has put up a number of mechanisms to achieve this. Women should therefore make use of the structures to better their lives.”
She castigated those who still harbour a tendency of laziness to the point of sending their children to streets to beg. She called upon women to change their attitudes and work hard to progress in society.
Diane Gashumba, the president of the National Women Council, in an interview with the Sunday Times said that women have opted to celebrate the Women’s Day through constructive activities where men are brought on board to participate.
"This time around the Women’s Day celebrations are going to be a little more practical. We have also brought men on board in many of the self-help activities,” she noted.
She emphasised the aspect of women joining cooperatives such as Umurenge SACCO and other credit schemes to easily support them.
The terrace digging activity was part of the preparations for the celebration of the International Women’s day slated for March 8.
The celebrations will be held at village level across the country through various activities such improving the state of genocide memorial sites, controlling soil erosion through terracing and sensitisations on forth coming elections.
