Being lame is not a crime

One time, I set out to walk down the streets of Kampala, and what I saw on the streets, shocked me. I was taken aback by the way, how physically handicapped people are cruelly treated. It is as if they lived everyday cursing the almighty who created them that way. The bible elaborates that we were all created in God’s image; that specifically implies that we’re all equal in this world irrespective of sex, or other statuses.

I found a well built man, wearing sun glasses. He looked every inch an American commando in Afghanistan. An old lame man approached him, dirty small plate in hand and turning an unprepared smile, begged for some money from the guy.

It’s incredible, how that big, well dressed man in a suit, turned gradually as an elephant wearing a gloomy face and barked loudly to the legless man that "Nvako nze nakulemaza bwotyo” connoting that "Back off am not the one who made you lame”.

A lady, who was preaching the gospel around there, shed tears and pulled out ten thousand shillings and donated to the lame guy. In fact I had no money in my pocket to give to this vulnerable person, but I felt like weeping.

Unfortunately this lame man remained cursing the rich man who had already disappeared saying that "Being lame is not a crime because I never planned to be like this, its just God’s plan”.

But remember that there is nobody that will go to heaven with his or her riches. All of them are to remain on this planet earth.

This means that every human being should be treated equally without discrimination, whether poor like church mouse, vulnerable, illiterate, and young or any other people.

There are people who were created with disabilities like being blind, deaf, and those whose bodies, were altered due to different circumstances like fighting in wars, or accidents but remained mentally positive and able to think.

These people should not be marginalized or under looked.
If these people were to be gathered and sensitized in different fields like tailoring, they can absolutely contribute immensely towards the economic growth the nation.

Therefore, I am kindly requesting that if you find such people on the streets and other places consider them as human and if you don’t have any thing to help them with, either financially or materially, just pass and go. Avoid looking at them because it hurts them.
