Have your say : Does house sharing affect the relationship amongst Friends?

At one time I had to console  a friend due to issues regarding house sharing. She told me that the housemate was a childhood friend and that is why she took her up thinking it was so easy to share a house. A shared house is a model of household in which a group of usually unrelated people reside together.

At one time I had to console  a friend due to issues regarding house sharing.

She told me that the housemate was a childhood friend and that is why she took her up thinking it was so easy to share a house. A shared house is a model of household in which a group of usually unrelated people reside together.

They could be housemates, flatmates or roomates who come from different families, same peer group for example University students, or single parents with their children and this act is usually done by people in the age group of 18-35yrs.

The relationship amongst roommates or housemates could be pre-exsiting  friendship or interpersonal  relationship.

House sharing is very popular amongest the young people because of the economical and social aspects of life such as sharing house bills, cooking, house work and cleaning inorder to reduce on the cost of living and enjoy interractions.

Conflict may arise if room-mates or house mates have different standards of cleanliness, diet, social life, privacy and amenities.

It’s on this matter I happened to collect views from different people on whether house sharing can affect the relationship amongst friends.

LAGRIMA KLEIN (AN ADMINISTRATOR)

Not at all. I have been living with a friend and we have not had any problem. It also depends on the people, some are flexible while others are not.

DAVID EATYAU (ECONOMIST)

Yes, it does cause misunderstandings in most cases. During house sharing, friends get to know the other side of the person that you probably did not know which affects the relationship in the long run.

ALICE ZIRIBAGGWA (HAIR DRESSER)

House sharing does affect the relationship amongst friends because some pretend to be your friends yet they snatch every good thing you get. For example if girls are sharing a house they tend to snatch each other‘s boyfriends thus affecting the relationship.

BRADAMS MUGUME (LAWYER)

It makes them friendlier since they get to know each other better especially one’s behaviour. Staying together strengthens the bond amongst friends.

RITAH UMUHOZA (STUDENT)

House sharing instils in an individual the sense of social responsibility, while living with someone else it means that they are part of you hence they are included in whatever you do.

COLINE MUGASHA (SALES PERSON)

Sharing a house with a friend trains you on how one can live with a family such as catering for the bills and considering  other people‘s feelings prior to yours.

KATALINA UWERA (PARENT)

This issue of house sharing helps you learn how to solve disputes. At any moment in life people get disagreements whether friends or married couples but what matters is how the problem is solved.
