THE annual national cross country is set to open this year’s athletics calendar after reports that the inter-club championship, initially scheduled for late February has been postponed to April.

The change is down to inadequate funds according to Jack Ngabonziza, the newly elected Secretary General of Rwanda Athletics Federation (RAF).

"We have had to move the competition because we don’t have enough funds to stage it.”

The national cross country championship has been scheduled for early March and the federation believes that the timing is perfect since local athletes will use it as a build up for the 38th World Cross Country Championship set for March 28 in Bydgoszcz, Poland.

Other major events on the RAF calendar include International Kigali Peace marathon (May), Kigali 20km race (June) and December’s National championship (Rendezvous national).
