Rwanda’s basketball giants APR have been drawn alongside Angola’s Primero De Agosto in this year’s Fiba-Africa Club championships that throw off next Thursday in Angola.

According to the draw, the zone five champions have been drawn in Group A alongside two Angolan sides Primero De Agosto and Interclube, ASPAC (Benin), M.B.C (Guinea) and ASB Kauka of DR Congo.

Commenting on the draws, APR’s Kenyan coach Cliff Owuor singled out the two Angolan sides as the team’s major threats.

"These Angolan clubs are definitely our major threats. They have been around for a while and have great experience at this level.  "However, we are in the championships because we are the best in the region and we have to uphold that reputation in Angola,” Owuor said.

He added, "We don’t have any information about ASPAC and M.B.C but I think we have a good chance because their countries (Benin and Guinea) are not renowned basketball playing nations.  "And for Congo’s ASB Kauka, we have played DRC on a couple of occasions and we should be in good position to get a result that we need from them,” he continued.

Group B or the group of death has the defending champions Petro Atletico (Angola) Nigeria’s Niger Potters and Abidjan ( Ivory Coast  ), Stade Malien (Mali), BC Onatra (DR Congo) and Ferroviario Da Beira (Mozambique).

Having avoided the group of death, Owuor said he was happy with the draw and noted that his team can now go to Luanda confident about their chances of going past the group stages.

The former Kenyan international is undoubtedly APR’s most celebrated coach having won a more than seven trophies including two national league titles and also he’s the first coach to qualify the club for the Fiba-Africa Club Championship.
