Rwandan left attacker Merci Gisubizo has revealed that his decision to leave APR VC for Rwanda Energy Group (REG) VC was motivated by his desire to seek a fresh experience in his volleyball career.
The 22-year-old joined REG VC on a two-year deal running until 2028 and is gradually settling into life at his new club.

His time at APR was overshadowed by controversy. In November 2023, during the CAVB Zone V Championship, Gisubizo head-butted then-coach Matthew Rwanyonga—an incident that earned him a one-year suspension from all volleyball activities by the national governing body (FRVB).
The attacker admits that his behavior in the recent years is haunting him and it made it difficult for him to return to the top of his game.
"I was young at the time, and of course I had to face the consequences,” Gisubizo told Times Sport. "I’m recovering from that period now. My focus is to help my team qualify for the playoffs and move forward.”
Determined to move beyond the setback, Gisubizo says he is concentrating on contributing positively at REG and rebuilding his reputation.
"For me, it’s about learning from my mistakes and continuing to grow,” he said.
He played a key role in REG’s dramatic five-set victory over Gisagara VC on Friday at Petit Stade Gymnasium—a result that kept their playoff hopes alive.

After 13 rounds, REG sit fifth on 25 points, just one behind fourth-placed Police VC. With two matches remaining in the regular season, REG are firmly in contention for a top-four finish.
They will next face Kigali Volleyball Club (KVC) before concluding their campaign against Gisubizo’s former side, APR VC, on Friday, February 28.
"We are preparing for every game with the same determination,” he said.
