Kigali hosted the historic championships from September 21 to 28 last year, the first time the global competition was held on African soil.

In a communique shared by the city through its official X account, Mayor Samuel Dusengiyumva described the recognition as a reflection of Kigali’s continued investment in safe cycling infrastructure and active mobility for residents of all ages.

"This award reflects Kigali’s commitment to sustainable mobility and the well-being of our residents,” he said, pledging continued expansion of cycling opportunities in the city.

UCI President David Lappartient said Kigali "wrote a historic chapter in global cycling” by delivering a successful event and advancing inclusive cycling policies that are shaping the future of the sport in Africa.

The Minister of Sports Nelly Mukazayire said the recognition aligns with Rwanda’s broader strategy to use sport, particularly cycling, as a driver of social and economic development, citing "sustained investment from grassroots programmes to flagship events such as Tour du Rwanda.”

UCI in Kigali drew thousands of visitors and a global broadcast audience, while also inspiring youth participation and strengthening Rwanda’s long-term cycling ecosystem.

Authorities say the Bike City label is not only recognition of a successful event but also a sign of Kigali’s growing role in sustainable urban mobility and global sport.
