Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) has confirmed having in custody three suspects in connection with the death of a truck driver last week.

Emmanuel Muhizi is said to have succumbed to injuries after he was beaten at a roadside bar in Kabuga, a Kigali city suburb.

Images of the broad daylight attack circulated on social networking sites, sparking outrage among social media users – especially as photos suggested there were onlookers, watching idly by.

In one of the photos, Muhizi is seen being strangled by two men, while in another he’s roughed up as he lay on the ground.

He died on the same day of the assault, on November 28.

The suspects were identified as Elie Ahishakiye, the manager of the bar in question, Jean-Claude Habiyaremye, a bouncer, and Juvenal Nshizimpumpu, a security guard.

Thierry Murangira, the RIB spokesperson, said the victim passed away after being repeatedly assaulted by the three men.

He noted that, during preliminary investigations, the suspects admitted to beating the victim claiming it was an act of revenge after Muhizi and his friend, identified as Arthur Niyonsenga, allegedly assaulted a friend of the incarcerated trio back in August.

While Niyonsenga was reportedly apprehended for the alleged August offence, Muhizi is said to have escaped arrest.

The three suspects are currently in custody at Rusororo RIB station pending further investigation.

Meanwhile, the body of the deceased has been taken to Rwanda Forensic Laboratory for post-mortem.

Upon conviction, the suspects risk a jail term ranging between 15 and 20 years and a fine of up to Rwf7, 000,000 should it be proven that the assault led to Muhizi’s death.
