2010 is a year for students and pupils go to school with academic resolutions. Determination is what gives students a good start towards achieving their goals.

"It is important to start the term with the aim of becoming first in class,” said 12 year- old Jean Rukundo, a P.3 pupil at Kigali Harvest primary school.

"I always ask my parents for the school materials I need because they enable me to excel in my studies.”

Baride Simugoma, 11, another P.3 pupil at APA-COPE Primary School said that being smart in addition to good performance is important.

"I must be smart because my parents told me I must be exemplary at school by putting on a clean and well ironed uniform,” Simugoma said.

Simugoma dislikes being embarrassed among other children for putting on a dirty uniform.

Nicolas Abimana, 12, is in P.4 at the same school and agreed with Baride and Rukundo but criticized pupils and students who intentionally extend the holidays.

He said "I will start school on Tuesday. But there are other children who come after a week and claim they own seats occupied by others.”
