Representatives from 39 cooperatives in Nyagatare District have completed a two-week training in organic farming.

The training that attracted close to 80 participants was funded by Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA-Rwanda). Participants were equipped with skills in organic farming with which is seen as economically more viable.

"There are many mistakes I was making before. For example, I used to despise chicken rearing but after this training I now know that I can buy a car if I raised chicken in a more productive way,” said an excited Marie Chantal who hails from Tugira Obuzima Bwiza cooperative in Nyagatare district.

The trainees demonstrated the making and eventual use of fertilizers and how to maximize yields on limited land especially growing vegetables.

Martin Rutasigwa , project manager with ADRA said the project operates in five sectors that include Mukara, Gatunda, Karama, Rukomo and Kabagwe.
